For years, the Real Diaper Association has wanted a comprehensive picture of how people use cloth diapers.  This information could be used to guide future projects and educational campaigns, and serve as a set of baseline information that we can use when working with allies to accomplish our mission.  To do this, we need to reach beyond our regular constituents, deeply into the world of people who cloth diaper but who are not RDA members. For this, we’ll need your help, both to participate and to spread the word. Read on…

Who we need

The purpose of this survey is to understand current cloth diapering practices. Therefore, this survey is for CURRENT CLOTH DIAPERING PARENTS ONLY. While we value all our cloth diaper supporters who used cloth diapers in the past, our goal with this survey is to learn how to help more families choose and use cloth diapers. The Real Diaper Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and we will use this information to influence how we educate parents about cloth diapers.

How much time will it take?

This survey should take you 15-20 minutes to complete. There are 80 questions across 9 pages.

Participant incentives

As an additional incentive to participate in this non-commercial survey, we’ll be doing a couple of prize packages. Three (3) random survey respondents will win some amazing hand-crafted DIY REUSE gifts (in line with our mission of promoting REUSABLE cloth diapers!).

Referral incentives

ALSO, we will similarly reward the three (3) people who refer the most respondents to this survey (so be sure to leave your email address AND give credit to the source who referred you on the last page of the survey!).

Why you REALLY want to help

I mentioned “additional” incentive above. The incentive that you ALL receive for participating in the survey is the knowledge that your responses will set the tone for future efforts to help more families find and use reusable cloth diapers. You have already discovered the benefits of using cloth diapers, and your responses will help us share this knowledge with more families. For your time and thoughtful consideration of your responses, please accept our sincere thanks! YOU are the people increasing awareness about cloth diapers among your friends and family. We are proud to work alongside you in the cloth diaper movement and are committed to helping you get more babies into cloth diapers!

  1. Kayte Langner Says:

    Hybrids were not a choice.

  2. Dan Says:

    Will you email the results?

  3. hdellarocca Says:

We will post the results of the survey on the blog. We will email the winners of the prizes. Hope that helps, Dan! – Heather

  4. Tricia Says:

The question about rinsing diapers did not include more than one extra rinse. I do 2-3 additional rinses and I think that might be fairly common.

  5. Kelly Says:

Passed this on to our localcloth community!

  6. Megan Says:

Our household is new to cloth diapering: there should have been explanations for all of the terms on the survey. It also would have helped to ask an open-ended question about how you diaper to account for those of us who are still learning. We have nine-week-old twins at home; the full amount of my knowledge of cloth diapering is only two months old and I learn new things all the time!

  7. Carlie Kallmann Says:

I agree with Kayte. Hybrids were not a choice. I use the FLIPS and while they use a PUL cover, they are not a pocket, nor are they a pre-fold but they are sort of a one-size though they have a different size for newborns.

  8. hdellarocca Says:

Thanks for the feedback, Tricia. I added another option, and we’ll just have to recognize that the answer might be off for the first segment of respondents.

  9. hdellarocca Says:

    Thanks, Kelly!

  10. hdellarocca Says:

I would consider a hybrid an all in two (AI2) because it does the two parts of a diaper’s job (moisture absorbency and moisture resistance) in two pieces, but it all goes on in one fell swoop (because the cloth soaker is snapped into the outer shell).

  11. hdellarocca Says:

Good feedback, Megan! I definitely take for granted all the terms we’ve learned. I’ll see if I can add some explanations to some of the questions. Thanks so much for managing to fit in a cloth diaper survey with nine-week-old twins!! Hope the diapering is going well for you!

Hi, Carlie. I would consider a hybrid an all in two (AI2) because it does the two parts of a diaper’s job (moisture absorbency and moisture resistance) in two pieces, but it all goes on in one fell swoop (because the cloth soaker is snapped into the outer shell).

in the washing section of the survey I was not able to put that I do a presoak and rinse in my bath tube since we have a shared coin washer and dryer.

Ooh, okay. Thanks for the input!!

  16. rachel steinberg Says:

I completed the survey – we use fleece pants and shorts 95% time as covers and that wasn’t an option anywhere in the survey.

  17. hdellarocca Says:

Thanks for the feedback, Rachel! I’ll have to check on where we can add this, as I think the only fleece reference is in question 34 where we asks what material people use for moisture resistance, but I don’t think we have anything about the shape (pants or shorts, etc). We’re keeping all this feedback so we can improve the survey next year. Thanks for participating!

  18. s Says:

The rinse cycle; I run an additional wash cycle instead of additional rinses. I don’t have a separate rinse cycle on my portable washing machine.

  19. Hawwa Says:

It would have been better if some of your questions were open ended, to give the option to those of us who want to explain our choices.

Some of my answers would have been:
-Can’t participate in any meetings as I don’t know any one else who use CDs,
-CD friendly detergent is not available locally, when I tried to order online, shipping cost more than the actual price of detergent, so cannot use CD safe detergent.
-I had to order all my CDs online from abroad, as the only thing available here is low quality flats and just one brand of AIOs, which isn’t a proper fit for my daughter, thus I use only Alva pockets.

  20. sether Says:

    done with the survey :)

  21. hdellarocca Says:

Good feedback! I totally forgot about that option – - and I even had a portable washer for my first year of diapering! Thanks.

  22. hdellarocca Says:

Thank you for the feedback! We actively tried to think of everything (and even ran a test group through the survey) so that we could avoid open-ended questions as they would be WAY to hard to analyze over thousands of survey respondents. Clearly, we missed some important qualifications on the answers, so I totally see how your detailed responses could give us better direction and understanding. We’ll take these explanations into account and will contact people for more detail about their surveys if we’re having a hard time interpreting our results. Thanks, again!!
